The Stroke Association

1 in 4 strokes in the UK occur in people under 65 years old. We believe in life after stroke. That’s why we support stroke survivors to make the best recovery they can. It’s why we campaign for better stroke care. And it’s why we fund research into finding new treatments and ways of preventing stroke.

Facts about our job

  • Stroke strikes every 3½ minutes in the UK.
  • 1 in 4 strokes happen to people aged 65 and under.
  • Stroke occurs approximately 152,000 times a year in the UK.

Stroke strikes every three and a half minutes in the UK. It strikes in an instant but its effects last a lifetime.

Stroke is one of the greatest health challenges of our time. Yet it’s not getting the attention or funding it deserves. It is the fourth biggest killer and one of the biggest causes of disability in the UK. Many people see stroke as something that only happens to older people. But a stroke can happen to anyone at any time, even to children and babies.

We’re the UK’s leading charity, working to change the world for people affected by stroke. Thanks to our supporters, we have saved thousands of lives by finding new ways to prevent and treat stroke over the last 20 years. Our support services have helped hundreds of thousands of people get through one of the most frightening experiences of their lives and build a life after stroke. And we contributed to the FAST campaign, which shows people how to recognise the signs of a stroke and take emergency action. This has helped more people than ever get vital emergency treatment.

We rely on your support to provide vital services, campaign for better stroke care and to find better treatments.

Stroke is preventable, treatable and beatable. Together we can conquer stroke.
